I’ve called myself a “trend-curious minimalist” for well over a decade now. I gravitate toward structured, less-is-more silhouettes and an overwhelmingly neutral color palette—but long before I settled on my personal style mantra, I knew I felt different when it came to jewelry. One of my earliest memories is of my mom’s impossibly long, cherry-red nails, which were accented with no fewer than five or six gold rings, many of which boasted some type of diamond. They’re not your typical everyday rings, per se, but she wore them with such unapologetic confidence that these days, I find myself emulating her: Instead of wearing one or two rings, I love to pile them on—oftentimes on the same finger.

But learning how to stack rings isn’t as much of a science as it is an art form: It’s something as deeply personal as the rings themselves. Similar to the way some women feel “incomplete” without a swipe of mascara or the perfect pair of sunglasses, I don’t leave the house without my rings—especially the styles that have been passed down from my mother and grandmother—because I never take them off. The mainstays in my rotation include the jagged, seven-stone ring I designed with the diamonds from my paternal grandmother’s favorite brooch, as well as my maternal grandmother’s six-stone ring, which boasts all the birthstones of her grandchildren. And over time, I’ve found that I love the way my family heirlooms pair with more modern, unique pieces, like these from MIRACO, a woman-founded company.
That said, there’s no secret formula to creating the perfect ring stack, as the best way to stack rings is with a combination that makes you feel like, well, you. But here are a few rules I swear by that makes finding the right mix of rings that much easier.
Start With High-Quality Jewelry
Perhaps it’s the collective move toward quiet luxury in recent seasons—or maybe it’s the tendency toward collecting fewer-but-better-quality items as you get older. Either way, once I hit my mid-30s, I did a hard reset on my once trend-forward jewelry collection. While there’s nothing wrong with the dainty little gold-fill stackers that made their rounds on Pinterest a decade ago, I found that not only did they tarnish fairly quickly, but I had to remove them every time I washed my hands unless I wanted green fingers. Now, I gravitate toward timeless-yet-nostalgic designs, like the Textured Diamond Ring, which features a singular line of diamonds across the top of the rigid silhouette, as well as the Textured Pavé Diamond Ring, a vertically textured gold ring features two lines of pavé diamonds in the front. Both are reminiscent of my mom’s favorite styles, too.

If you’re excited to start ring stacking, the best investment you can make is high-quality, genuine fine jewelry that will stand the test of time. You use your hands more than almost any other part of your body, so look for styles with superior materials like 14-carat white or yellow gold, as well as premium diamonds with well-crafted, pro-grade settings. This won’t just lessen the likelihood of them getting damaged, but it’ll also ensure long-term comfort—and no telltale green fingers.
Mix Metals
Growing up, you were either a gold or a silver girl—never both. I stayed within my bounds as a fan of gold, while my older sister was obsessed with all things silver. It wasn’t until about 10 years ago that I borrowed a pair of her earrings to keep my piercing from closing up that I realized how sophisticated both metals look together—and the first place I implemented it was with my rings.
While most of my family heirlooms are gold, I’ve found that they look even brighter and more radiant when paired with silver or white gold items, like the Atlas Diamond Ring, which comes in both 14K white and yellow gold, plus .54 carats of pave-style diamonds.
Show Your Personality
Above all else, the best way to stack rings is however you feel like: Don’t be afraid to get creative and wear multiple rings on one finger—so long as it’s comfortable—and if you’re feeling stuck, try a combination you haven’t thought of before. In addition to mixing metals, I love to pair unexpected silhouettes, like two dueling statement rings, together for a bold look. Just like your favorite outfit, your go-to stack will make you feel like the best version of yourself.
